Sky-Inspired Art: Capturing the Beauty of North Yorkshire’s Changing Skies

An Obsession with the Sky: Finding Inspiration in Every Sunrise

Since moving to North Yorkshire in 2022, I’ve developed a bit of an obsession. It’s not with the rolling hills, the charming villages, or the beautiful landscape that surrounds us—but with the sky. Living here, I’ve been gifted with a view that stretches far and wide, and every time I look out the back door, I’m reminded of just how lucky I am to witness such a remarkable natural phenomenon.

The sky, at its best, offers a daily invitation to pause and reflect. From our back door, we’re treated to some of the most stunning sunrises imaginable—each one uniquely different, shifting with the seasons, painting a new picture every day. From soft violet clouds to blazing neon oranges, the sky constantly shifts and surprises. It’s this natural transformation that has become an integral part of my daily routine.

One of the things I’ve come to love most about these skies is their transience. This morning, for example, the sky started off with a heavy blanket of dull, grey clouds, barely hinting at any promise of light. But within moments, a glimmer of vibrant orange broke through the cloud cover—a brilliant seam of light that gradually spread, revealing hues of pink and gold. Just as quickly, though, the sky returned to its grey shroud, as if the entire performance had never happened.

And that, I think, is the beauty of it all—the fleeting moments. It’s so easy to miss these subtle changes if you don’t take the time to stop and look. For me, it’s a reminder to slow down and be present, and it’s a lesson that has found its way into my artwork.

The Sky in My Art: Capturing the Fleeting Beauty

These ever-changing skyscapes have become a major source of inspiration in my work. My paintings are often an attempt to capture the fleeting beauty of these transient moments. I try to preserve the warm glows, the soft light, and the life-affirming sense of renewal that comes with the changing sky.

But it’s not just the big, sweeping views that inspire me. My prints zoom in on the smaller, quieter moments—like the way soft autumn light rests on a hedgerow or how a seedhead glows in the late afternoon sun. These seemingly small details, often overlooked, are just as much a part of the landscape’s story.

With the view from my studio window changing every day, I feel incredibly fortunate to be continually inspired by nature's rhythms. The sky’s unpredictable nature means that there’s always something new to witness—and something new to create.
